It has been YEARS since Renee and I have been to Maui. Maui is the first Hawaiian island that I had experienced as an adult. My parents took me to Hawaii when I was just a baby but, as expected, I remembered nothing from that visit. When Renee and I took that first trip to Maui back in 2008, I was hooked. From that point, we have visited Hawaii once a year, at least, ever since. It’s always so hard to stay away. Those trade winds seem to call for me all the way from across the ocean.
Sommer and Brody have a similar love for Hawaii. They were engaged at the top of Haleakela. How cool to be able to say you were engaged at the top of a volcano! Their whirlwind of a love story hasn’t stopped since. They had a very intimate wedding in San Francisco just a few days before Christmas where it rained non-stop. We met up with them after all of the holiday buzz had worn off and they mentioned that they were interested in doing their honeymoon back in Maui where they had gotten engaged. Well, seeing as Renee and I had planned to spend a week of the summer in Maui, we lovingly encouraged these two to line up their visit with ours and how FANTASTIC a day after wedding photo shoot would be. That was all it took. They were in with tickets booked within 24 hours.
Their look for this photo shoot in Maui was similar to what you might see if we were doing elopement photos in Maui. Sommer and Brody’s beach wedding attire got them a few “congratulations” by beach-goers. I believe that these words of affirmation really helped them play the part.
We did their wedding day after photo session on Kamaole Beach in Kihei, Maui. Kihei is one of our favorite little beach towns. If you have ever been to Maui then you may be familiar with the silky beach sand and the out-of-this-world sunsets that you get to experience from the western side of the island. It’s very hard to resist. This session was actually surrounded by loads of locals and tourists who came out to watch the sunset. It seems like nightly “thing to do” for the neighborhood. However, you wouldn’t know how surrounded we were by seeing these photos. I think that, by the end of our session, standing on the edge as the sun was sinking into the sea, Sommer and Brody must have felt like the only two people that existed in that moment.
I just love how this day after photo session in Maui turned out. It makes me want to go back for more. Who is ready??
